If you own a whippet, you already know the contradiction at the heart of the breed. They’re lightning fast on the field, but the moment you sit down on the sofa, there’s a whippet draped across you like a fur blanket. Whippets are deeply people-oriented dogs — and that’s exactly what makes daycare such a natural fit for them.
At Friends Paw Life, we care for whippets regularly across our route from Aylesbury through Wendover, Aston Clinton, and all the way to Great Missenden. Here’s what we’ve found: whippets don’t just cope at daycare — they thrive. But it helps to understand why.
Why Whippets Struggle When Left Alone
Whippets were bred to work closely with humans and hunt in pairs or small groups. That heritage means they’re hardwired for company. Leave a whippet alone for a full working day and you’re likely to come home to a dog that’s anxious, vocal, and possibly destructive — not out of misbehaviour, but out of genuine distress.
Separation anxiety is one of the most commonly reported issues in whippet owners. The breed is sensitive, emotionally attuned, and simply doesn’t cope well in silence on their own. That’s not a training failure — it’s the breed being the breed.
Why Whippets Thrive in Group Daycare
Whippets are non-aggressive, gentle with other dogs, and adaptable to different play styles — which makes them ideal in a group care environment. They’re not boisterous or pushy; they observe, they run when they want to run, and they rest when they need to rest.
Our facility at Rookwood Cottage in the Chilterns has exactly the mix a whippet needs: open space for sprinting, quiet zones for rest, and constant social contact with other dogs and a familiar carer. The Stony Bay area gives them something visually stimulating, while our Green Lawns gives them the clear run they love.
Because daycare at Friends Paw Life includes active training sessions — teaching good manners, recall, and calm behaviour — whippets pick up structure as part of a normal day, not as a separate drill. They’re intelligent enough to learn quickly and sensitive enough to respond well to calm, positive reinforcement.
What a Day at Friends Paw Life Looks Like for a Whippet
Your whippet is collected from your door — we cover Aylesbury (HP19, HP20, HP21), Weston Turville, Aston Clinton, Wendover, Princes Risborough, Prestwood, and Great Missenden — and joins the group at our licensed Chilterns facility. The day includes morning play, outdoor exploration across our themed areas, training time, rest periods in The Dog House, and afternoon activities. They’re dropped back home at the end of the day, exercised and genuinely calm.
Pricing starts from £35 per session. For five or more sessions, the rate drops to £50 per day. There’s no extra charge based on breed or size — a whippet pays the same as any other dog.
Free Pick-Up from Aylesbury and the Surrounding Area
We offer free pick-up and drop-off along our route from Aylesbury to Great Missenden. If you’re in Aylesbury, Wendover, Aston Clinton, Weston Turville, Monks Risborough, Princes Risborough, Prestwood, or anywhere in between — we come to you. No need to go out of your way before work.
Frequently Asked Questions — Whippets at Daycare
Are whippets good with other dogs at daycare?
Yes — whippets are typically gentle and non-confrontational. They pick their friends, enjoy a sprint, and don’t tend to bully or dominate. They fit well into mixed groups.
Do whippets need a lot of exercise at daycare?
They need bursts, not marathons. A whippet will sprint flat out for two minutes and then sleep for two hours. Our day is built around this rhythm.
Will my whippet be cold at the facility?
We keep a close eye on temperature-sensitive breeds. Our indoor rest area (The Dog House) is warm and covered, and we adjust outdoor time based on the weather. Coats are welcome.
Is daycare stressful for a sensitive whippet?
A well-introduced whippet usually settles in quickly. We always start with a free meet and greet so your dog can explore the environment and meet the group before their first full day.
How do I book a place for my whippet in Aylesbury?
Call us on 07768 979878 or get in touch to arrange a free meet and greet. Same-day appointments are available. We cover the full Aylesbury to Great Missenden corridor.
