A note before you go: pub policies change, staff change, and a venue that was dog-welcoming last year might have tightened up this year. To the north and west, the Vale of Aylesbury stretches out across open farmland with canal paths and river meadows. Whatever your dog’s pace — sprint, amble, or nose-to-ground sniff — there’s a walk within reach.

Here are eight of our favourites, from short local strolls to proper half-day routes, all within comfortable driving distance of Aylesbury.

1. Wendover Woods (Wendover, HP22)

Wendover Woods is the standout walk on this list. Managed by Forestry England, it covers around 800 acres of mixed woodland in the Chiltern Hills above Wendover, with waymarked trails from 1 to 6 miles. Dogs can be off-lead on most of the forest tracks, and the varied terrain — climbs, flat woodland paths, open glades — gives active dogs a proper workout. There’s a car park with facilities on Aston Hill Road. Expect mud in winter; bring it on.

Good for: Active dogs, breeds that love woodland and scent. Labradors, spaniels, and working breeds will be in heaven here.

2. Coombe Hill (Wendover, HP22)

Coombe Hill is National Trust land and one of the highest viewpoints in the Chilterns, with panoramic views across the Vale of Aylesbury. The walk up from Wendover is around 2 miles return via a chalk path through farmland and open grassland. Dogs are welcome and the terrain is open enough to give them a good run. The monument at the top makes a good turning point. Can be exposed in wind — bring a coat for slim-coated breeds.

Good for: Views, open space, shorter family walks. Good for dogs of all sizes.

3. Ivinghoe Beacon (near Tring, LU6)

The Ivinghoe Beacon marks the northern end of the Ridgeway — one of Britain’s oldest walking routes — and offers some of the most dramatic open downland walking in the Chilterns. The summit is about 1.5 miles from the National Trust car park at Bridgewater Monument. Open grassland means excellent visibility for off-lead dogs, though the terrain is exposed. A longer loop via Pitstone Hill adds an extra mile or so.

Good for: Dogs that like open space and open countryside. Whippets, lurchers, and other sight hounds absolutely love it up here.

4. Grand Union Canal Towpath (Aylesbury Arm)

The Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union Canal runs from Marsworth to Aylesbury Basin — about 6 miles of flat, easy towpath walking that’s excellent year-round. The path is well-maintained, mostly off-road, and gives dogs a good long stretch without the need for hills. You can pick up the towpath from various points in Aylesbury or walk out from the basin itself. Wildlife along the canal — herons, kingfishers, ducks — provides natural enrichment for curious dogs.

Good for: Longer flat walks, older dogs, dogs not keen on hills. Good in all weathers as the towpath drains well.

5. Pulpit Hill and Chequers Estate (Princes Risborough, HP27)

Pulpit Hill is a wooded National Trust escarpment above Princes Risborough with beech woodland walks and clear views from the top. The estate sits adjacent to Chequers (the Prime Minister’s country residence) but the public footpaths through the wider area are well-walked and freely accessible. Various loop options from 2–5 miles. Dogs are welcome; keep them under close control near livestock.

Good for: Woodland walks with some elevation. A solid half-day walk for energetic dogs.

6. The Lee and Grim’s Ditch (Great Missenden area, HP16)

The Lee is a quiet Chilterns village near Great Missenden with a network of footpaths through farmland and beech woods. From The Lee, you can access sections of Grim’s Ditch — an ancient earthwork that runs across the Chilterns — for a historically interesting route through varied countryside. The area is peaceful, relatively uncrowded, and excellent for dogs that need space and calm. Multiple loop options from 2–4 miles.

The walk around Hartwell combines a stretch of the Grand Union Canal with the parkland of Hartwell House (now a hotel) for a pleasant 3-mile circular. Mostly flat, largely traffic-free, with some sections of open parkland ideal for a free run. A good option when you want something more varied than a pure canal path.

8. Prestwood Nature Reserve (Prestwood, HP16)

A smaller site but a gem — Prestwood Nature Reserve is a chalk grassland managed by the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) with a short circular walk through wildflower meadow and scrub habitat. The day includes morning play, outdoor exploration across our themed areas, training time, rest periods in The Dog House, and afternoon activities. They’re dropped back home at the end of the day, exercised and genuinely calm.

Pricing starts from £35 per session. For five or more sessions, the rate drops to £50 per day. There’s no extra charge based on breed or size — a whippet pays the same as any other dog.
