Choosing a dog daycare in Aylesbury is a big decision — you’re trusting someone with a member of your family. With more daycares opening across Buckinghamshire, it’s worth knowing what separates a genuinely good, properly licensed setting from the rest. Here’s what to look for.

1. A valid animal activity licence

In England, any business offering dog daycare or boarding must hold a licence issued by the local council under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) Regulations 2018. Ask to see the licence number and check it covers the activity your dog will actually be doing. At Friends Paw Life we hold two active licences (LC202311-129068 and LC202504-146849) covering both day care and home boarding, and we’re happy to show them on request.

2. A home environment, not kennels

Dogs are social animals, and most settle far better in a home-from-home setting than in a row of kennels. Ask where your dog will spend the day, and where they’ll sleep if they board overnight. Our dogs spend the day at our Great Missenden daycare facility with its themed outdoor areas, and boarders stay overnight as part of a family home in Aylesbury — never in a kennel.

3. Small, well-matched groups

Good daycare isn’t about cramming in as many dogs as possible. Ask how dogs are grouped, how many are in at once, and how they handle a nervous or reactive dog. Dogs should be matched by temperament and supervised throughout the day.

4. Training built into the day

The best daycares do more than watch your dog — they help them become better behaved. Look for somewhere that works on recall, lead manners and socialisation as part of the daily routine. Our daycare doubles as a playschool, so dogs come home well-exercised and better mannered. Read more about our Aylesbury dog daycare.

5. Fair, transparent pricing

Pricing should be clear and consistent. Watch out for hidden size surcharges — some daycares charge more for larger dogs. We charge the same rate for every dog regardless of breed or size, so there are no surprises. A good daycare will also offer a free meet & greet before you commit, so you and your dog can see the place first.

6. Insurance, safety and peace of mind

Check the daycare is fully insured, that outdoor areas are secure, and that someone is always supervising. Ask how they handle emergencies.

7. Pick-up and drop-off

A pick-up and drop-off service makes life much easier if you work or have a busy schedule. We offer free pick-up and drop-off along the whole Aylesbury-to-Great Missenden corridor, so your dog’s day starts and ends smoothly.

Ready to visit?

If you’re looking for licensed dog daycare or home dog boarding in Aylesbury, we’d love to show you around. Book a free meet & greet with Friends Paw Life — call 07768979878 or get in touch through our website.

Dog-Friendly Pubs from Wendover to Great Missenden — A Guide for the Chilterns Corridor

The stretch of Chilterns countryside between Wendover and Great Missenden is, happily, excellent dog-walking territory — and equally happily, it’s well-supplied with pubs that welcome dogs. Whether you’re finishing a walk in Wendover Woods, coming off the Ridgeway, or just want a Sunday lunch with the dog under the table, this guide covers the best options along the corridor.

A note before you go: pub policies change, staff change, and a venue that was dog-welcoming last year might have tightened up this year. We’d always recommend calling ahead, especially if you’re planning a meal rather than a quick drink. Most of the pubs below have a good track record with dogs, but a quick call saves a wasted journey.

The Shoulder of Mutton, Wendover (HP22)

A traditional Chilterns pub in the centre of Wendover, the Shoulder of Mutton is a solid starting or finishing point for walks in the surrounding hills. Dogs are welcomed in the bar area, and the pub has a comfortable, unfussy feel that suits muddy boots and muddy dogs alike. Good range of ales and straightforward pub food. Convenient for Coombe Hill and the various footpaths heading south out of Wendover.

The Red Lion, Wendover (HP22)

The Red Lion sits on the High Street in Wendover and has a long reputation as a dog-friendly local. Bar seating is the go-to for dogs; the beer garden is a decent size and catches the afternoon sun. Worth checking current opening hours before visiting. Good for a post-walk pint after Wendover Woods or Coombe Hill.

The Swan, Monks Risborough (HP27)

Just off the main road between Aylesbury and Princes Risborough, The Swan at Monks Risborough is a popular village pub with a relaxed attitude to dogs. The garden is a good size and well-maintained. The kitchen does a decent menu — this is a pub that takes its food seriously, so worth booking at weekends if you’re planning a meal. Handy for walks around Pulpit Hill and the Chequers Estate.

The Bird in Hand, Prestwood (HP16)

Prestwood has a few decent local options, and The Bird in Hand is a well-established village pub with a traditional feel and a welcome for well-behaved dogs in the bar. Close to Prestwood Nature Reserve and the network of footpaths linking Prestwood with Great Missenden — good for finishing a walk from either direction. Parking available.

The Nag’s Head, Great Missenden (HP16)

The Nag’s Head is one of the better-known pubs in Great Missenden, a village famous as Roald Dahl’s home and the location of the Roald Dahl Museum. Dogs are welcome in the bar, and the pub has a comfortable, characterful interior. The village itself is good for a wander before or after a drink, and there are footpaths heading out into the surrounding Chilterns valleys in multiple directions.

The King’s Head, Little Missenden (HP7)

A short drive from Great Missenden, Little Missenden is a beautifully preserved Chilterns village, and The King’s Head is its pub — a proper English village local with low beams, a fire in winter, and a very relaxed attitude to dogs. It’s a quiet, unfussy place and can get busy at weekends, so arriving early is advisable. The footpaths around Little Missenden are excellent for a short post-pub stroll.

The White Lion, Little Kingshill (HP16)

Between Great Missenden and Prestwood, The White Lion at Little Kingshill is a community-focused village pub with a friendly atmosphere and a good outdoor space. Dogs are welcomed, and the location is convenient for a wide range of walking routes in the central Chilterns. Worth checking their events calendar — they do regular community nights that make the pub feel very much like a living local rather than a chain operation.

Practical Tips for Pub Visits with Dogs

Call ahead — especially for food visits. Not all pubs allow dogs in dining areas, and some have breed restrictions.

Bring a lead — even if your dog is perfectly trained, arriving with a lead on signals you’re in control.

Carry water — many pubs will offer a water bowl but not all do. A collapsible bowl is worth keeping in the car.

Time your visit — arriving at 11:00 on a Sunday is very different from arriving at 13:30. A quieter pub is an easier pub for dogs.

Sit near the door — if your dog is reactive or easily stressed, positioning near an exit gives you an easy escape route if needed.

If your dog is well-exercised and genuinely calm, pub trips become much simpler. A dog that’s had a structured day at daycare — or a long walk in Wendover Woods or along the canal — is a dog that’ll lie under the table without incident.

Best Dog Walks Near Aylesbury — A Local Guide for Dog Owners

Aylesbury sits at the edge of some of the best dog walking country in the South East. To the south and east, the Chiltern Hills open up into beech woodland, chalk downland, and wide valley views. To the north and west, the Vale of Aylesbury stretches out across open farmland with canal paths and river meadows. Whatever your dog’s pace — sprint, amble, or nose-to-ground sniff — there’s a walk within reach.

Here are eight of our favourites, from short local strolls to proper half-day routes, all within comfortable driving distance of Aylesbury.

1. Wendover Woods (Wendover, HP22)

Wendover Woods is the standout walk on this list. Managed by Forestry England, it covers around 800 acres of mixed woodland in the Chiltern Hills above Wendover, with waymarked trails from 1 to 6 miles. Dogs can be off-lead on most of the forest tracks, and the varied terrain — climbs, flat woodland paths, open glades — gives active dogs a proper workout. There’s a car park with facilities on Aston Hill Road. Expect mud in winter; bring it on.

Good for: Active dogs, breeds that love woodland and scent. Labradors, spaniels, and working breeds will be in heaven here.

2. Coombe Hill (Wendover, HP22)

Coombe Hill is National Trust land and one of the highest viewpoints in the Chilterns, with panoramic views across the Vale of Aylesbury. The walk up from Wendover is around 2 miles return via a chalk path through farmland and open grassland. Dogs are welcome and the terrain is open enough to give them a good run. The monument at the top makes a good turning point. Can be exposed in wind — bring a coat for slim-coated breeds.

Good for: Views, open space, shorter family walks. Good for dogs of all sizes.

3. Ivinghoe Beacon (near Tring, LU6)

The Ivinghoe Beacon marks the northern end of the Ridgeway — one of Britain’s oldest walking routes — and offers some of the most dramatic open downland walking in the Chilterns. The summit is about 1.5 miles from the National Trust car park at Bridgewater Monument. Open grassland means excellent visibility for off-lead dogs, though the terrain is exposed. A longer loop via Pitstone Hill adds an extra mile or so.

Good for: Dogs that like open space and open countryside. Whippets, lurchers, and other sight hounds absolutely love it up here.

4. Grand Union Canal Towpath (Aylesbury Arm)

The Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union Canal runs from Marsworth to Aylesbury Basin — about 6 miles of flat, easy towpath walking that’s excellent year-round. The path is well-maintained, mostly off-road, and gives dogs a good long stretch without the need for hills. You can pick up the towpath from various points in Aylesbury or walk out from the basin itself. Wildlife along the canal — herons, kingfishers, ducks — provides natural enrichment for curious dogs.

Good for: Longer flat walks, older dogs, dogs not keen on hills. Good in all weathers as the towpath drains well.

5. Pulpit Hill and Chequers Estate (Princes Risborough, HP27)

Pulpit Hill is a wooded National Trust escarpment above Princes Risborough with beech woodland walks and clear views from the top. The estate sits adjacent to Chequers (the Prime Minister’s country residence) but the public footpaths through the wider area are well-walked and freely accessible. Various loop options from 2–5 miles. Dogs are welcome; keep them under close control near livestock.

Good for: Woodland walks with some elevation. A solid half-day walk for energetic dogs.

6. The Lee and Grim’s Ditch (Great Missenden area, HP16)

The Lee is a quiet Chilterns village near Great Missenden with a network of footpaths through farmland and beech woods. From The Lee, you can access sections of Grim’s Ditch — an ancient earthwork that runs across the Chilterns — for a historically interesting route through varied countryside. The area is peaceful, relatively uncrowded, and excellent for dogs that need space and calm. Multiple loop options from 2–4 miles.

Good for: Dogs that prefer quieter paths. Excellent combination of woodland and open farmland.

7. Hartwell and Canal Walk (Aylesbury, HP17)

The walk around Hartwell combines a stretch of the Grand Union Canal with the parkland of Hartwell House (now a hotel) for a pleasant 3-mile circular. Mostly flat, largely traffic-free, with some sections of open parkland ideal for a free run. A good option when you want something more varied than a pure canal path.

Good for: Shorter walks, mixed terrain, dogs that like water. Good for families with younger dogs in training.

8. Prestwood Nature Reserve (Prestwood, HP16)

A smaller site but a gem — Prestwood Nature Reserve is a chalk grassland managed by the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) with a short circular walk through wildflower meadow and scrub habitat. Dogs are welcome on leads. More of a short stroll than a full walk, but the diversity of wildlife and habitat makes it a rich sensory experience for scent-driven dogs. Pair it with a longer walk nearby.

Good for: Shorter visits, dogs that are nose-led (beagles, spaniels). Also good for owners who want a quieter connection with the landscape.

A Note on Walk Days vs Rest Days

If your dog attends daycare at Friends Paw Life during the week, their rest days at home might actually benefit from a gentler walk rather than a long one — a tired dog is a calmer dog, and back-to-back high-intensity days can lead to overstimulation in some breeds. The walks above range from full-day efforts to short 30-minute strolls — match the walk to your dog’s energy level on the day.

We collect from Aylesbury, Wendover, Aston Clinton, Weston Turville, Monks Risborough, Princes Risborough, Prestwood, and Great Missenden. If you’d like your dog to have a fully active week — structured daycare days plus great weekend walks — call 07768 979878 to arrange a free meet and greet.
